Do you love technology? My students do! Unfortunately, I work at a school with many disadvantaged students. However, technology always engages them. This project will help motivate them, engage them, and most importantly help them to achieve their goals.
My class of 24 third graders just finished setting goals for themselves for the remainder of the year.
They want to do well, and we do the best we can with what we have available to us. A few years ago, I received a grant for a SMART Board. This wonderful tool is so engaging that my students will do just about anything for "SMART Board" time and I have seen the benefits! Our school is a low income, Title 1 school, full of kids who want to learn and need to be inspired and encouraged.
My Project
I would like my students to have access to 4 Kindle Fires. They will be used during "Daily 5" literacy rotations as well as throughout the day. I love the Kindle Fire because not only can we access thousands of books, but it is WIFI enabled and students would be able to use different apps and the Internet to assist their learning. I envision some of my third graders using it for phonics practice; I have many struggling readers and 5 special education students. I can see many of my at grade level students reading new books that they don't have access to in our classroom or in the library. I can also envision my higher readers getting the enrichment that they need and desire by having a literacy circle group. Students would be able to access the Internet to work on projects, adding 4 more computers to my class. My third grade class currently has readers who are reading from the kindergarten-5th grade level. Having Kindle Fires would enable me to reach this huge reading gap.
My students suffer from a great deal of adversity.
They need instruction, support, encouragement, and tools to succeed. I can provide the instruction, support, and encouragement, but I can not provide all of the tools on my own. I thank you for taking the time to read about my project. It is awesome that you're considering supporting education, no matter which project you choose!
