This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I love math but most students don't.This year I have tried to bring my love of math to them by providing them with number talks, collaborative math, and project based math assessments. Now when I say it's math time, I hear, "Yah!" instead of groans!

I teach at a Title I school that is nestled in a neighborhood of mostly apartments and older rental homes.

These children mostly come from crowded homes, gang and drug infested neighborhoods, illiteracy, dysfunction, under education, and poverty. Yet, their spirits are bright and shiny and school is the place where they feel safe and protected. Our school is a place where they can be themselves, be creative, and be successful. I am amazed every day by their stamina, courage, and determination. They are enthusiastic learners despite the chaos around them and talk about their dreams and hopes for the future as attainable goals. As far as I am concerned, they are rock stars!

My Project

360 Math is a model of teaching math that transforms your whole classroom into a white board for student work. The premise behind it is that traditionally math has been very boring, and most students sit at desks, the teacher lectures, they take notes, and then are assigned some problems. This model gets students up out of their seats and doing math problems on the white board walls. The teacher has a 360 degree view of the student work and can then with the aid of a wireless device teach from the center and observe everything that is going on without having to move around. Student engagement is enhanced and students also have the opportunity to collaborate. Students can also see who is struggling or who "gets it" and seek out the assistance of others. This is the best model of Common Core math that I have seen and I am excited to implement it and bring more math excitement to my students!

The percentage of students who end up in honors math classes is very low because students have such negative views of math from elementary and middle school math classes.

Math is one of the subjects that you have to have a strong base knowledge in in order to take advanced classes and I am hoping that by increasing their love of math, that it will spur more students to pursue advanced math classes and careers in engineering, sciences, math, and technology fields.
