This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

As a child I remember a bookshelf full of books and trips to the library. I had a quiet place to read and I know this is the experience of many of the users of Donors Choose. My students do not share those same experiences. Sometimes the only reading material is the instructions to a video game.

My school is a Title I school with a majority of students receiving free or reduced price lunches.

We are a very diverse school, which provides great opportunities for students to experience cultures they may not have regular exposure to. My students are all enrolled in Special Education, from grades K-5. Their academic levels are anywhere from one to five years behind their peers. When reading everyone can see the title of the book you are reading. This is hard for a struggling reader because they are embarrassed for their peers to see what book they are reading. Last year Donors Choose, with your support, helped to solve part of the problem. You funded a Reading Corner for my room. I could never have imagined how popular it would be. It is a quiet place to sit down with a book and read. The first time a child sees it they always smile and ask questions. The next step is to stock it with high interest titles that will engage while helping to improve reading skills.

My Project

The books being requested are from a variety of categories. There are classics that many of us read as children that need to be shared with this generation. Examples of these are; Harold and the Purple Crayon ; Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day; Where the Wild Things Are. Finally being able to read a chapter book is seen as a major accomplishment by them. When you are a struggling reading that becomes very difficult because many books written at your reading level may be seen as too immature by you. One way to address this is through graphic novels. To the students they are reading something fun that looks like what their peers are reading. But, the great thing is that it is at their reading level. Examples of these are; Lunch Lady and the Cyborg Substitute, Frankie Pickle and the Closet of Doom; Bone. The final type of book I have included is contemporary stories of varying reading levels that are very popular and will stand the test of time.
