This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"You are not done until everyone is done." My students do not believe in "sitting still." After some students finish their work, my students go around the classroom to find other students who need help. You'll see students translating geometric terms into Spanish and drawing figures to explain.

Our mathematicians are currently working at a high school in Miami, FL.

The community of is one of the oldest and poorest in Miami. As my students grow up in an inner city community, they are exposed to violence, poverty and socio-economic challenges. Many of my students struggle financially to afford basic needs that other students in suburban school have. In result, 90+% of my students depended on free breakfast/lunch at school and they depend on our school staff for guidance and moral support because many of them come from broken homes. However, these obstacles cannot stop us from working towards excellence.

My Project

I currently teach total of 160 students. Many of them are labeled as “ESOL” (English for Speakers of Other Languages) students, as English Learner. In addition, many of my students are suffering from a learning disability. Thus, it is extremely difficult for my students to understand difficult mathematical concepts of geometry. As Miami Dade county district obligates these students to be tested based on End of Year computer-based exam, I would like to have my students to use computer to explorer examples of complex problems online through Khan Academy and Carnegie Learning tools. Many of my students do not have computers nor internet access at home. Thus, it is extremely difficult for my students to prepare for this exam. We currently have 3 working computers in my class and we need more computers for my students immediately! My students need 5 computers to prepare for their exam. In addition to the computers, they also need 6 cases of paper for printing papers.

These newly purchased quality resources will enable my students to further develop their mathematical skills and train them to be logical thinkers.
