My Students

Imagine you are sitting on a chair with a group of 26 kindergarteners in front of you. It is writing time, and you are attempting to demonstrate proper letter formation, or read aloud a book. They are leaning forward in anticipation. Suddenly, hands start to raise. "I can't see!" they say.

My students are little.

But they have big minds. They crave doing things for themselves. School is brand new. They come from a wide range of backgrounds. Many of them are learning English for the first time. Some of them, including their parents, have never encountered formal education before. Some of them need amplified sound, some need enlarged images. All students need to be able to view demonstrations to satisfy their need to try everything out on their own.

My Project

Now, imagine a different scenario. Instead of crowding around, craning their heads, commenting that "So and So's head is in the way", the students are seated comfortably on the floor. The teacher is still in front, to the side a little. But now the letter she's demonstrating is no longer little, confined to the small whiteboard. It is projected and is three feet tall! Every eye is carefully watching the letter being formed. All can see. All are enraptured. All are ready to try it out. Or think of this: A teacher spending hours copying songs and poems onto chart paper. Imagine freeing up that time to instead tailor instruction more individually to students! Students learn from the teacher, but they also learn from each other. When a student shares his/her thoughts and process, it opens up new thinking for their peers. Learning is expanded, and students can see new applications of what they're learning. This is significantly enhanced through a projector!

Learning will still happen without the projector.

I will make sure of that. But the opportunities that await with it! The prodigious projector will give rise to prodigious learning. Be a part of 52 students shouting, "I did it all by myself!" (Prodigious: extraordinary, marvelous)
