My Students

Our classroom supply of paperback dictionaries are well worn from plenty of use! Each student has a dictionary at his or her desk and we use them each day to explore Latin and Greek root words, solve analogies, and expand our vocabulary! A new set of durable dictionaries will keep us going!

Our middle school has a large population of students who are learning English as a second language.

We use dictionaries daily to help us further develop vocabulary and language skills. It is vital that each student have immediate access to a dictionary without having to leave his or her desk to be able to keep the pace with our classroom activities. My students are hard working, ambitious, and driven to be successful. These dictionaries are just a small tool to help them on their journey while reaching for the stars!

My Project

Each day we complete a warm-up that includes a variety of skills including analogies, synonyms, antonyms, homophones, and figurative language. We also broaden our vocabulary through the study of Greek and Latin roots. My students use the dictionaries to complete the warm ups, improve their daily reflections and writing assignments, and understand words that are new or unfamiliar. A set of hard-backed dictionaries will stand up to our daily use and continue to help future classes!

Many of these students do not have access to a dictionary or Internet access at home.

These students, both native English speakers and those who are learning English as a second language, have broadened their vocabulary and made connections between concepts through their use and application of dictionary skills.
