A Relaxing Retreat for Reluctant Readers

My students need supplies for our library, including book sets (Bluford series, Percy Jackson and the Olympians, Pretty Little Liars) and a variety of other fiction and nonfiction texts. We also need beanbags.

My Students

It's simple: the more we practice something, the better we get at it. It's as true for reading as it is for playing piano, driving a car, or even tying shoelaces!

I teach at a rural high school in an area that was struggling economically even before blizzards in January, flooding in March, and tornadoes in late April.

Our funding has decreased dramatically as our community tries to recover financially from not only the recession, but also damage to roads, utilities, and buildings. Many of my students are struggling readers and seem to have built an anti-book force field around themselves! They've developed the idea that reading means "figuring out which details will be on the quiz."

My Project

I want to reawaken my students' eyes to the excitement and joy that can come from connecting with a book that is "just right" for them. I've chosen a wide variety of fiction and non-fiction, both current and classic, for our library. All of these are books that I'm familiar with, so I will be able to make personalized recommendations to my students based on their interests. I've also asked for some beanbag filler to refresh our comfy seats and make our library an inviting place to hang out.

Books can take us beyond ourselves and show us possibilities we could never imagine on our own.
