My Students

Imagine you are a student taking a class or an end-of-course state exam. Sitting next to you is another student in a different class and that student has one of the newest calculators on the market. Our high school does not have the same graphing calculators in each of our math classrooms.

Our students attend the most rural high school in our county.

Each year, they achieve beyond our dreams but each classroom doesn't have access to the same materials or technology. About 37% of our students are on free or reduced lunch and don't have the money to purchase expensive supplies such as a graphing calculator. Some of our students have parents in the military while others come from local farms. Some of our students ride the bus for an hour before they arrive at the high school. The climate at our school is warm, inviting, and encouraging. The teachers are willing, and often eager, to step up to get the students whatever they need to be successful.

My Project

These resources will allow each of our 8 math classrooms and another classroom where students with special needs take math to have a complete set of graphing calculators. Currently, each of the regular and special education math teachers have the teacher software that goes along with the graphing calculators. We are able to do activities where the teacher controls the interactive activity using their computer. Having a graphing calculator for every student in the math classroom would allow each student to participate in an interactive technology activity that would solidify their understanding of several mathematical concepts. These calculators allow our students to grab points on the calculator through the use of a touchpad and move them to see what is happening. By actually "doing" the activity themselves, they will learn what we are trying to teach.

This project will "level the playing field" for ALL of our math students at this high school.

Every student will know that they have the same tools for their education as their friend does that has a different math classroom. Every student in this school plays an important role in the success of our school and we want to provide them with the tools they need to be successful. When each math classroom has the tools our students need, then the students and the community will benefit.
