Orienteering Like A Pirate

My Students

Arghhhh! I can't remember how to use me compass to get to me buried treasure......

My students are inner-city students, many of which receive government support checks each month.

Our school is a Title I school, meaning that many of our students receive free lunch due to their financial inadequacies. There is much of the social "networking" seen in my school as is witnessed in many inner city schools. My students desperately need to get outside to practically apply the concepts learned in class.

My Project

I am asking for orienteering compasses for my students so that they can learn the basics of outdoor field navigation. As stated earlier, anything to get my students out of the classroom and onto the campus, interacting in a lab format is desirable. My Dad, also a college professor told me once "Son, if you want to create a memory, take a child and do an activity outside". This proposal is a fulfillment of that admonition.

In our physics class, we learn vector analysis and how it relates to the Pythagorean theorem.

We learn to use sin, cos, and tan-trigonometric functions to determine distances and angles. The compasses requested will provide an outdoor opportunity for reinforcing the physics concepts taught in class. There will be a pirate treasure waiting at the end of each correctly oriented course.
