My students need both fiction and nonfiction support books for the classroom. Although I have a couple of books, you can really enhance a lesson by reading a story!

My Students

The library in our school is limited in the amount of current science books. Being a science teacher who teaches both English Language Learners and special education students, I like to enhance each topic with a good book that complements it!

We are a diverse group of people, with students hailing from all over the world...and students with many different ability levels.

I like to reach them all! One of the students' favorite times is "story time." I realize they are seventh graders, but they are still kids! They love to sit around my feet while I read them a story about Louis Pasteur or Gregor Mendel. I recently realized I was lacking in the amount of books I had to read them, and given the success of my prior project I thought I would try.

My Project

We are requesting books that will help to enhance each science lesson. The books would be a supplement, and not all books would be read in entirety to the whole class. Each book has an aspect of it that connects to a science concept. I am aiming to teach students that science is everywhere, and that reading is important in all subject areas.

This project will help students to make connections and understand concepts.

It will also provide students who finish more quickly than others the opportunity to read materials related to the content area in their "spare time." It will provide students who struggle with material with an opportunity to make connections and hear the content from a non-textbook point of view.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
