Students Need Books: Ownership = Accountability

My students need 23 copies each of "Of Mice and Men", "The Pearl", "A Raisin in the Sun", and "Beowulf" to be able to hold, feel, and smell a new book of their own.

My Students

My students have overcome serious economic, domestic and scholastic obstacles. They are now on the cusp of success: graduation and recognition of their potential.

I teach in a large, city-district evening school.

My kids range in age from 16-21 and have all had difficulties in the day school setting, whether they've become early mothers or lost their homes causing excessive absence. They have made a conscious decision to return to school for an accelerated and intense program. Our students prove wrong many of the stereotypes swirling around public education. When we jump into literature, they dive in with 100% engagement. However, the books we "borrow" from the district are used and reused, tattered and ruined with profane comments from other schools. With my kids standing so close to a great achievement - graduation with the promise of future success - it's a shame they are relegated to using these books for their final educational steps. It'd be wonderful to allow them to touch, smell and be able to call these four great literary titles their own. They've made it this far. Let's give them a gift they'll remember as they conquer their senior years!

My Project

These four novels are not only pertinent in helping my kids pass their final exams, they offer significant life lessons to a population of students who need such teachings. Of Mice and Men and The Pearl both concern lessons of testing the strength of relationships in the face of life challenges. A Raisin in the Sun concerns an African American family realizing that when times are tough, counting on family love and respect is a winning combination. Finally, Beowulf is a challenging epic about tackling one's own demons by accomplishing the impossible in life. My kids traditionally relate to all four of these titles, and many have approached me with stories from home - awful stories - about how they've felt like particular characters in the books. These titles will probably be the first books my kids have over had the pleasure of calling their own, and every time they look at them in the future, they will remember their positive messages - a lasting reward for gracious donors.

We've armed our students with knowledge about what's to come for them after graduation: many are without one/both parents, have children or have overcome addiction - and all have returned to education to obtain their diploma, fill out college applications and formulate dreams they've never thought realistic.

Giving them this great gift of literature, reminding them that they've been armed with the tools and skills to overcome any obstacle, will reinforce their abilities to reach their potentials.
