My Students

First graders see the world with curiosity and wonder. I want my students to have a chance to use their natural inquisitiveness to explore and discover mathematical concepts. For this to happen, they need classroom resources that facilitate a hands-on approach to learning math.

My bright bunch of first graders are indeed curious, playful, and eager to learn.

They thrive on engaging learning experiences which allow them to make discoveries, find connections, and feel proud of themselves as learners! They live in an urban neighborhood in northern California and come from homes where they are loved and families who care deeply about their education and well-being. Unfortunately, they do not often have access to resources and experiences that could enrich their lives and their learning beyond their basic needs. Our school works hard to provide them with the most engaging, enriching educational experiences we can, however even our school has limited resources due to lack of funding.

My Project

I want my students' math learning experiences to go beyond our workbook pages so that they can take a hands-on approach to discovering and understanding mathematical concepts. They love hands-on classroom activities such as using manipulatives (blocks, counters), solving puzzles, and playing games. When they have the chance to use these types of materials, I see their excitement and I also see their success in learning. For this reason, I am asking for these resources to add to our limited classroom supply of math puzzles, games, and manipulatives. These resources will give my students fun, engaging learning experiences which they can do on their own, or in cooperation with one another. The element of fun can be very motivating for students! Having learning tools that they can access independently will help them grow as self-sufficient learners and independent thinkers. When they engage in these activities cooperatively, they will build social skills and problem-solving ability.

Hands-on, playful learning experiences can be very exciting and eye-opening for young, emergent learners like the children in my class.

With your help, my students can have access to resources which will enrich their mathematical learning beyond their workbooks, and beyond what I can currently provide for them.
