My Students

Remember when you were 5 and loved to "cook" for your family members? Or have a fancy "tea and cookies" with your Grandma? Imagine not being able to pretend you were cooking a meal because the kitchen set you own is older than your mom and dad.

My students are kindergartens who come from low income families.

They are caring kids who just want to please. The school they attend is an inner city school but the teachers work hard to make sure the students achieve grade level standard. Many of them don't have a lot of toys at home to pretend with but they have plenty of video games which do not leave much to the imagination. They come to school and LOVE the kitchen set. They want to play kitchen throughout the day. "What would you like to eat today?"

My Project

My students would be thrilled to have a kitchen set, food, and dishes to play with that are not as old as the building they attend school in! They will not have to fight over the dishes because there will be enough for everyone. They will have pretend food, which they don't have at this time. My students will learn so much from having a new kitchen play area. The students will learn sharing with their peers. I will be able to integrate reading activities into the kitchen by having them write recipes of what they are pretending to cook. They will be able to "read" recipes to make pretend dishes to serve to each other. I will also be able to collect paper products from restaurants so they can pretend to serve food from the restaurants. I can put a cash register in the kitchen and they can play grocery store while learning math at the same time. The possibilities for pretend play in a kitchen set are endless!

This project will help my students in so many ways!

They will increase their imaginations, learn reading skills that will help them as they begin to read books, and learn writing skills that will help them when they have to write lists and directions in later grades. They will always remember their year in kindergarten when they got to "cook" for their teacher and the principal. This project will also help incoming kindergarteners for the next 20 years and beyond!
