Middle School Motivation: Applying Skills With iPad Apps

My Students

Middle school students often don't realize how important each day at school is. They are constantly distracted and many need help to put forth the effort needed to be successful. My students will be competing globally for jobs. I need to help them make the most of middle school.

Many of the students I teach live in single-parent homes or both of their parents work.

Some students are from affluent homes while others are on the free-and-reduced lunch program. My school is a high-achieving school, but there are still some who perform below grade level. The majority of middle school students need help with motivation at one time or another.

My Project

We already know that today's students are wired to learn from technology. Unfortunately, schools are financially unable to keep up with the fast pace of technology. Technology will be a major part of this generations future. The haves and the have nots grow farther apart, but having access to any technology (even iPads) will help bridge this gap, and at the same time it will spark the interest of those who already have access to these tools. We need to seriously consider what can be done to motivate our student population. Our country has been so blessed, but that is a two-sided coin. Many students are not hungry for an education like many students in foreign countries. It is our job to light that fire for our students. One way that I hope to do that is by offering them access to something that they love to use (iPads). Every day new apps are created, and many of them can bring the real world to my classroom in a hands-on way.

Parents and teachers know that our children can perform and excel.

They also know that one of the biggest obstacles is student motivation. My request addresses that piece of student learning.
