My Students

Show, don't tell. I can say this to my students time and time again, but it doesn't seem to stick. So I need some action that will be louder than my words.

I teach in a rural community.

But although sometimes it feels like we're light-years from civilization, we're right in the middle of the tight economy. Factory jobs aren't secure. Farms are struggling. Education can take a back seat to more practical concerns. Many of the students in our school try to work as many hours as they can at minimum wage because the income helps to support their family.

My Project

These students don't see themselves as writers. I believe they have great things to share with the world, but when I gave them the opportunity to write about what really mattered to them, many of them sat and stared at a blank page for the rest of the class. So I backed up: Observe. Describe. And the words began to flow. But one of the problems we noticed was that our words didn't capture our ideas very well. I could see that my students needed to be more specific in their writing. I want to have them create designs with the Lego and Tinker Toy sets in small groups, and then describe the objects they create. Likewise, Taboo is a game that specifically limits the way the players are allowed to describe objects and concepts.

I am incredibly excited about what I am seeing in my classes.

I want to provide opportunities for my students to strengthen their skills further, so that they can share the wonderful ideas I know are waiting inside them.
