My Students

How many things did you do in high school, and never had a chance to do again? I'm lucky in that I got to go to college and see what my science teachers in high school called "The Big Show." Many of my students will not have the opportunity to go to college, so the science they get now is it.

My students come from diverse backgrounds; some are immigrants working on their second or third languages.

Many are foster children trying to find a home that fits for them. Most are from an economically disadvantaged household, but all of them have the potential to succeed. Our school is located in Michigan; a state which has been especially hard hit by the economic downturn in the country. Since we are a charter school, our funds are often limited to begin with - we can't ask the voters for a technology millage the way that many schools can. Many of the scientific tools that exist for high schools are out of our reach simply because of the cost. Purchasing probes for my students would wipe out my classroom budget for more than 2 years. Our school centers around science, but it is often difficult to incorporate the technology with the money that we have to work with. We recently received new student laptops through a grant, and I would now like to have some probes to go with them.

My Project

In order for my state to be successful its graduates must be technologically savvy. This is where you can come to save the day! With the Vernier Probes, my students will be able to use age appropriate techniques for their scientific investigations. Instead of relying on pH paper and guessing what the colors mean, students will be able to look at a graph to find the pH of a solution and see how the addition of an acid or a base affects it. Biology & Chemistry students will both benefit. The turbidity sensor will allow students to take samples of water from our pond and nearby rivers and streams & correlate the turbidity of the water to the variety of life that they see in it. Not only will our AP Biology class can use this, but also the AP Environmental Science class. Having EKG & heart rate sensors will allow students to see data that comes from their own bodies, instead of a book. Many times EKG's are shown on TV, with the Vernier Sensor, students will better understand what they mean.

What did you like most about science when you were a kid?

Chances are it was not reading textbooks and taking notes, but DOING science. Getting your hands dirty and finding out answers is much more fun that reading about what someone else did. Science should be a verb, not a noun; it means to know by examining. In our technological climate, research requires computers. Your donation will allow my students to "science" using technology.
