This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Can you imagine how tough it would be to complete a science research project without being able to understand what you read? Our class is striving to understand nonfiction text to use within our content. These materials will help us to focus on the content while reinforcing reading skills.

Our students are a hardworking, eager to learn bunch who love to read everything that they get their hands on.

We are now working together to make sure that every student is getting the most out of every book, but our nonfiction resources are limited. Many students come from a low income family, as we are a Title I school, and do not have a variety of books to choose from at home. By building up the resources that we have in our classroom we are able to provide a text rich environment for our current class as well as those students who come after them. By providing our students with nonfiction materials we allow them to become researchers and put them in the driver's seat for their own learning. Our K-5 elementary school serves students from all backgrounds and we are working as a team to grow together and make sure that every student is successful.

My Project

This variety of nonfiction resources will serve the primary role of supplementing content instruction by bringing the concepts that we learn about in science and social studies into our reading as well. In using these materials, we will reinforce new learning as well as practice our reading strategies to become even better readers. Additionally, all of these materials will be used by our class and others to create student research reports. This is a very important element of the materials, because it is vital that students learn at a young age how to find and report on information as well as cite their resources. In order for this to happen, each student must have text that they are able to read and comprehend. This is why the leveled readers in particular are so important. I have requested a set of leveled readers as well as several small group nonfiction resources to allow my students the ability to conduct research at their own reading level.

By allowing our students the opportunity to have and use nonfiction resources we are creating future researchers.

Researching is a skill that will forever be beneficial to these students for the rest of their lives. It is important that we are able to encourage and foster this through interesting, meaningful text now that will excite them.
