Learning With Literature Circles

My students need sets of books and a CD/Tape Player for literature circles to enhance their reading comprehension through discussion and engagement.

My Students

TV. If kids are entertained by two letters, imagine the fun they'll have with twenty-six. Open your child's imagination. Open a book. ~Author Unknown. Reading takes you on an adventure. Help instill the love of reading in my students.

My 5th graders at a Title I school in Maryland have lots of potential but lack background knowledge.

Many of the students come from poverty, broken and transient homes, and need lots of encouragement. They do not have some of the experiences I did growing up such as family vacations, homework help, or knowledge of current events. Instead, they have much different experiences such as helping raise their younger siblings, witnessing violence, and living next door to drug dealers. For numerous reasons, these students have bigger things on their mind then reading and school. However, our school strives to show these students what success and achievement feels like. I see their potential for learning and growth, and I want to engage their minds and give them the adventures that they never had in the hope that they will become better, independent readers.

My Project

In order for literature circles to be successful, books are needed. Due to budget cut-backs, the school hasn't been able to purchase books for private classroom usage. The books I would like, including Chocolate Fever, Maniac Magee, The BFG, Tuck Everlasting, and Number the Stars, will be used solely for the classroom purpose of literature circles during guided reading time. Students will be broken into groups based on their reading level and assigned a book with a correlating calendar. They will read several pages of the book and complete a corresponding job, such as the word finder, the connector, the passage picker, the discussion director, or the artful artist. The following day, students will meet in their groups and use their job roles to have a discussion about the pages read. The CD/Tape recorder will be used to record their literature circle conversations.

Sometimes everyone needs an escape, and books make a great escape.

Many of my students could use an escape as well as the experience of reading and discussing different books. Overall, I want my students to appreciate reading as they improve their reading comprehension, vocabulary knowledge, and reading fluency to prepare them for their futures.
