My Students

Early childhood experts agree that active play and movement are critical to the growth and development of young students. Ideally, 20% of a 4 year old's should day should be gross motor activity. My students don't get PE, we follow a mandated schedule, and have very limited resources.

I teach the most amazing four years olds at a public school in a diverse, urban setting.

My students know they are "the best prekindergarten", and work hard to show others that this is true through their caring attitudes and good choices. They are a quirky bunch, full of energy, drama, and laughter. While some of my students are at the kindergarten or first grade level academically, they are ALL eager to learn more, and all have the need for physical activity so typical of four year olds.

My Project

Our mandated schedule limits the amount of gross motor movement my students experience to one recess period and whatever I can fit into the designated academic blocks. While I try to be creative, and my students are very receptive, there's only so much we can do with our imaginations. The active play materials will be used to incorporate movement into math lessons. The activities and games will allow students to use number, shape, and color recognition. They will be used to develop skills in counting sets, addition, subtraction, measuring, patience and cooperation. While I intend to use these materials to enhance mathematical learning, students will be able to practice and develop skills across the curriculum through active play.

My students have been learning about the food pyramid, nutrition, and the need for exercise to keep our bodies healthy.
