Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach 6th Grade Reading in a school that has the majority of students on a free and reduced breakfast and lunch. Many of our students have parents who never finished high school. I am trying to show them a different way and it all begins with reading.

School for many of my students is a place to get away from gangs and drugs. This also needs to be the place that gives the students better options in their lives. A different role than one that their families are faced with. My students come to school and tell me that they do not read and that they hate it when they have to read. The first step in dealing with this mentality is to change the environment in the classroom from hard chairs and desks to that of peace and comfort by providing them with bean bags to relax in.

What we need is a safe, comfortable, and relaxing place where the students can come in the classroom grab a book and let their minds go on a journey. Who does not enjoy sprawling out in a bean bag? I am requesting 4 different colored bean bags for my class!

You will help me make it possible to show my students that reading can be enjoyable. Once the students have this comfortable place to come in and relax then they will see that reading is an outlet for them.
