Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Previously, a Peace Corps Volunteer, I am motivated to assist low income students in gaining opportunities to improve their life. Economics class benefits students by teaching concepts important for adult success. This year our school celebrates its 70th anniversary. During these seventy years the demographics surrounding the school have dramatically changed. Now, about 87% of the student body is low income, 96% are Hispanic with most being first born generation Americans or are immigrants themselves. The campus reflects the usual shortcomings of a low-income, inner city neighborhood. To engage students through high interest lessons, student centered learning experiences must use a variety of different kinds of lessons. Four assignments I include in that variety are creative writing projects where students must manipulate hands-on materials. All four assignments call for unique, create answers (products) and higher order thinking framed with Bloom's taxonomy model so many levels of thinking are addressed. In addition, assignments are rubric graded. Students participate by working in cluster groups to complete the evaluations. To carry out the writing assignments, supplies need to be purchased. The writing project supplies are not obtainable through campus funding. The first writing assignment is an outline of a chapter in the Economic textbook. Materials are colored file folders cut in half, several colors of index cards, and scotch tape. A second assignment is creating a story book with traditional pages to turn. Third, a story cube with six sides; a square box is made. Directions guide creation of a composition for each of the six sides of the cube; but each student's cube is truly a unique creation. A fourth assignment is titled 'pop-up story book'. Again, uniqueness and creativity are emphasized when each student makes their pop-up story book about an Economic concept. Students at this campus get a natural high when an outsider takes an interest in them. The Economics students will want to take pictures of their learning experiences to share and send with thank you responses to their donor.
