Podcasting. A great equalizer in the field of technology. The great thing? Not many schools are doing it yet. That's where we come in. In our school, we plan to use podcasting in our K-5 Magnet School Program. As a technology facilitator in a new magnet school, my primary role is to help teachers teach literacy according to the century. Some of the old ways just do not work anymore. We deal with a very diverse population, amounting to a staggering amount of poverty--check out our free/reduced lunch percentage. Our students need a lot of help with their literacy skills. For this reason, we want to present the 21st Century Skills for literacy in a much different way than in the past. Gone are the basal readers (those thick reading books). Now teachers use novels, web stories, blogs, and more to expand student literacy. We plan to implement podcasting to help with this same thing. How? 1. By creating audio books, recorded by 4th and 5th graders, for K-2 students. 2. Creating old-fashioned radio 'skits' based on literature read in class. 3. Historical reenactments, such as a Martin Luther King, Jr. story or one on the Civil War. And this list just represents immediate plans. We would like to complete many more activities throughout the year. By using a different type of medium, we really expect to reach more students. Providing different learning experiences allows teachers and students to truly reach their potential. We possess the creativity. We lack some of the equipment, such as mp3 players that will allow us to get started. I want to allow teachers to check out the players and use them in their classroom as needed. What great centers! Thank you! Thank you!
