Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

This project is for the 06-07 academic year. I will be teaching a class of 20 first graders. This project will allow my class, and two other first grade classes, for a total of 60 kids, to visit the local zoo and park. (This is because a bus holds 60 kids and it's not cost effective to take a whole bus with only 20 kids.) I teach in East Palo Alto, California, a low income, largely Latino/African American/Pacific Islander community. East Palo Alto is the community depicted in the movie Dangerous Minds. Students in this community are often kept at home to watch TV during all the school breaks. Their families don't take them on vacations, or to places like the zoo or museum. Field trips are often the only way in which these kids get to have real world experiences. This makes field trips extra special and extra meaningful for these children. The funding for the field trip includes the cost of the school district bus, and the price of admission for kids, teachers and chaperones. This field trip allows kids to see live animals, and touch the ones in the petting zoo, see a puppet show, and get out of their small community and into the world experiencing things! Thank you for reading this proposal and your support of education in America.
