My school, Raleigh Charter High School, is a public charter school in North Carolina that offers many programs to prepare our students. I have worked with students in the field of oceanography at lunch once/week for the past four years. We explore topics and learn in depth material in preparation for the National Ocean Science Bowl. This year we won the state competition and will go to California to compete in the national competition. In preparing for this we have had to rely on internet sources and outdated used books that I have bought through local book stores. I would like to continue working with students on this ongoing "elective" offering, but having texts would facilitate the process. A set of five Oceanography texts for the freshmen level college course would allow us to all work from the same resources and would save me a great deal of time. These texts would be used by about ten students per year for a number of years. We don't have a library, so these texts would also be made available to the general community as a resource. Students work very hard on this subject area out of their interest in science. I don't receive pay for teaching them once/week throughout the year, but I find it worthwhile as it allows for a diversity of science subjects to be explored.
