All over the country the problem of childhood obesity has been identified as a problem. As we all know, fast food is a huge factor in this problem. I have created a project for students that will reinforce basic health information, their personal dietary and calorie needs, and how to make healthy food choices- especially at fast food restaurants. As a class we will research basic nutritional needs of all people; then the students will use the Internet to research their needs based on age, size, and activity level. Finally, student will discover the nutritional value of their favorite fast food meals and compare it to their needs. Using their personalized nutritional information students will create balanced meals using menu items from fast food restaurants. As the final project I would like for students to create their own fast food restaurant with a menu made of “healthy fast food” meals. Working with a partner students would use graphics editing software to create the look of the exterior of the restaurant and the menu. They would then continue to use the graphics editing software along with web development software to create a website to advertise their restaurant. I have already secured web server space to house the websites, so they would actually be on the Internet for students to share. In the past I have had students do the first part of the project- they loved it and stated it did affect the food choices they made. I want to provide the students with an opportunity to share what they learned with others and have a chance to be creative while developing their technology skills. The Adobe Creative Suite supplies the industries leading graphics editing software, and the Macromedia Suite provides the leading web development software. All students would have an opportunity to use all of the software in this project, and several others throughout the school year. In my course content area, course subject matter is taught and reinforced while learning technology skills. My school was affected by Hurricanes Rita and Katrina this school year. We took in over 100 displaced students. As an educator it has been an honor to help these students through this time and I would love to continue to give them life enhancing lessons, such as the one above, to help them to continue to grow and keep their head up in these trying times.
