All of my third graders are English Language Learners. Since English is their second language (Spanish is their first), language arts are a huge challenge for them. One area that is particularly hard are rhyming words. Second language learners often have a hard time differentiating between the different sounds within a word and have a particularly hard time hearing ending sounds. They might think that "shave" and "shade" mean the same thing since they both start the same way. I have been working hard, using rhyming, to make them hear the difference. These sort of activities also lead to vocabulary building--an essential skill for the ESL student. Rather than rote memorization (boring!!!), I have previously had success with games such as BINGO that allows them to feel like they are playing a game when really they are learning vital skills. My class this year is also having a particularly hard time with memorizing their multiplication tables, understanding money, telling time. I feel BINGO, as well as the other math based materials I have requested, would help in these areas as well. I suppose some students don't mind sitting still all day (I have yet to encounter them...), but in my classroom, I like to foster an environment of interaction and enthusiasm. How better to do that then giving kids the chance to play a game, master a concept, and be the first one to stand up and shout..... BINGO!
