“New basketball goals will make our playground look nicer. We need some that stand tall and proud.” - Third grade student
“Our basketball goals don't have any nets. They are raggedy!” - Third grade student
“The rims we do have are broken (one goal is curved down and one is sideways) and sometimes when I do lay-ups I know it should have went in, but it didn't because it is broken.” - Third grade student
West Lenoir is a small K-5 school (250 students) in an industrial neighborhood tucked in the foothills of the North Carolina mountains (basketball country)! Ninety-four percent of our students are on free or reduced lunch, making our school one of the poorest in our system. Many of our parents are displaced furniture factory employees, unemployed due to plants closing and overseas outsourcing. Our parents would love to contribute financially towards this project; however, they struggle to support their families.
Our school's playground is the center of the community, used on a daily basis by our students as well as people from the surrounding neighborhood. As a PE teacher, I welcome its use, as it encourages physical activity and play which in turn helps reduce many health risks due to inactivity. Playing on the basketball court remains one of the most popular playground activities.
Our basketball court is in a dire need for repair. Our backboards and goals have withstood the test of time for many years (20 plus), yet they are on their last leg and need to be replaced. Recently, Donors Choose donations provided us with one goal system. We need another to complete our set.
This proposal is to help remedy the broken basketball goals by replacing them with a new system that includes 2 steel poles, aluminum backboards and chain nets. This new system will certainly brighten the faces of our basketball enthusiasts and encourage some of our less inclined students to shoot hoops. Our popular March Madness basketball tournament, cancelled last year due to the broken goals, will once again be a highlight in physical education.
A single pole system rather than the current 2-pole system would decrease the likelihood of injury. These heavy-duty gooseneck 41/2” zinc plated steel poles have a 25-year guarantee and the aluminum backboard has lifetime guarantee. The cost of a heavy-duty basketball system and a steel chain net from Sportime is $1,266, including shipping and fulfillment.
