Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a Special Education Teacher in the South Bronx, New York working with severely disabled students in an impoverished neighborhood. Many of the students are non-verbal and communicate through picture symbols. Unable to vocalize their needs and wants, the picture symbols serve as communication tools enabling the students to engage in school activities as well as inform others of their basic needs. In dire need, I am requesting funding for the purchase of portable communication devices which would provide students with a voice.
The portable communication devices would allow staff/family members to record their voice in any language. It displays interchangeable pictures and recordings. To communicate or participate in a class activity the student presses the picture symbol.
Living well below the poverty line, our parents are unable to purchase the communication devices. As a result, I am requesting funding for three communication devices. Many of the communication devices run on AA batteries, allowing for low cost maintenance. Please help in providing a voice for the underprivileged severely disabled students.
