Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
At Eastway Middle School, a Title 1 school in Charlotte, NC, we have an unique opportunity to interact with our students outside of the typical classroom setting on what we call "Club Days". Being an eighth grade science teacher, I appreciate the time to teach something outside of my subject area with a diverse mix of students across all three grades.
This year, one other teacher and I decided to start the Harry Potter Book Club as our club (really just a sneaky way to get our students interested in reading!) We have concocted butterbeer and tried Bertie Botts Beans of Every Flavor to snag their interest in the subject matter, but are at a loss because we do not have a class set of books. We would love for each of our students to be able to take home a copy of their own to be able to read outside of the once a month club time.
We believe that it is vital for our students to receive these books. Harry Potter is something that each of these students have interest in, and this opportunity to read could springboard their interest in an even broader range of subjects.
More than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households
