I teach all subjects to a group of 30 wonderful kids in South Chicago. We would like an LCD projector for several reasons. I currently use four six-year-old PCs, an older 27 in.TV (shared between four rooms), and my own DVD player in a variety of roles for my 5th grade classes. In language arts I use film adaptations of novels that I read aloud to the kids (Holes, Because of Winn Dixie, Freak the Mighty, Ella Enchanted, etc.) Since most of the kids are reading well below grade level, read alouds make the material accessible to them. After I finish reading the novels we all watch the film version. I treat the films as a celebration, like a movie theater experience. Film versions of novels are an excellent, engaging way to experience language arts elements such as narrative, character development, and dialogue. The kids love the medium of film and comparing the strengths and shortcomings of films and novels is always fun for them. An LCD projector would be used to watch the book-to-movie adaptations on a big screen in the class. This way it would be viewable by all the kids in class and make these events truly engaging. The second, and perhaps most important, use for the projector is to demonstrate Web research and navigation skills to the entire class at once. Currently I struggle to instruct one child at a time on computers while (usually unsuccessfully) managing the rest of the class. From my experience observing in other schools (often in wealthier neighborhoods) in Chicago, the kids feel confident and comfortable around the Web and computers. Our kids at Mireles are unsure and inexperienced with technology. We have the greatest, most comprehensive, free library and learning resource imaginable with the Internet yet my kids struggle to access it. Besides teaching, I am a working journalist covering technology. I'm passionate about equal access to the Internet and, with an LCD projector, I could help my kids become confident and effective Web researchers with whole group Internet lessons.
