I am a first year teacher at a public school in Chicago, Illinois. I teach Special Education in an inclusionary setting. This means that I join my students in their regular education setting and I bring the resources to them so that they can learn in a setting with their peers and not be isolated in a self-contained setting. This year I will be working with students in the 5th grade and students in kindergarten.
Reading time is a very important time in my classroom. During read aloud time, I read to my students. Everyday, after lunch, when our bellies are full, we turn the lights down low, get comfortable in our beanbag chairs, and on our reading rug and we learn to engage in literature. I take this time to stress the enjoyment that reading brings. While we are sitting comfortably in our beanbag chairs, we learn strategies to help us become good readers. For students with learning disabilities, strategies are so important. One might say that a better term for students with LD is really learning strategy disabled. That is why it is so important that I take this time to model and teach reading strategies. Such strategies involve vocabulary, comprehension, fluency, visual imagery, and most importantly, metacognition. During our reading times, we focus on novels, biographies, poetry, short stories, and magazines.
This year my goal is to create a wonderful, diverse, and engaging library. I want my students to learn to love to read. I believe that the most important impact that I can make on a child is to teach them to love reading. I am asking for your help so that I may create a classroom that is safe for my students, one in which they can take chances and risks in their learning. With your help, I will be able to provide reading materials about many, many different subjects so that I may engage all readers.
