My students need 29 copies of Kafka's novel "The Trial."

I teach in a high need inner-city high school. The news coming out of my building is bleak; our neighborhood is dangerous, our test scores are abysmal, and our building is viewed as a war zone by many members of our community. The thing is, though, that my students defy all of that. I teach Advanced Placement English Literature in this setting, and I make AP classes available to students who, although behind their peers in suburban schools, have a ravenous desire to learn. I have never met young adults who so deeply appreciate the opportunity to work hard and to create new opportunities for themselves. 29 students rose to the occasion, voluntarily taking AP English Lit this year, because they want something better for themselves. The need for a class set of Kafka's "The Trial" arose because of my students' brilliance and drive. I pushed my students hard last year, but they kept pace. We could have accomplished more...if we had the needed resources. Thus: I want to add another book to our curriculum this year. I'm asking for copies of "The Trial" because, frankly, I know that my students are up to the task. It will challenge them to work on critical reading skills. At the same time, though, I sincerely believe that my students - students who have survived state takeover of their school districts, too many superintendents to count, and three building principals in four years - will be able to understand Kafka's portrayal of modernity in a way that few other students ever will. Kafka fits in my classroom. My students deserve to be exposed to him, and they deserve to critically engage with a critical question: what has modernity gotten us? Your donation will give them a chance to challenge the world around them, and will serve as a springboard as they head off to college and to take on the world.
