We are a 9th Grade Academy whose goal is to better prepare our ninth graders for high school. We offer extra support, smaller class sizes, longer class periods and a smaller school setting. We have a maximum enrollment of 200 students. Our teachers work in two teams teaching the same students so that we can better meet and support their needs, I teach world History, Global 9.
At the best of times our school does not have a lot of money. This year our district is on a contingency budget, so all basic supplies have been cut. You can just imagine how my request for sewing machines went over.
I bet your asking: What does a history teacher need with sewing machines? I would jokingly tell you that I want my students to experience the factory system of the late 1800's OR I'm starting a sweat shop to help fund school activities. Neither of which is true. After many discussions with students this past year and few missed opportunities I believe a fashion design and sewing club would be well received and very useful. This would teach a basic skill to the students who choose to participate and provide a way to create artifacts and teaching tools for everyone.
The goal would be to explore various fashion and fabric styles throughout history and recreate them with the students to use in class and at the various festivals and talent shows the school has planned. For example beautiful geometrically patterned fabrics are created in Nigeria through a process known as batiking this fabric is then used to make traditional dress - which is something we wanted to do with the students this year and were unable to. Another opportunity is through our funded partnership with a local theater. Our students will be seeing The Taming of the Shrew while participating in a school-wide in-depth project exploring the Renaissance, as well as a festival at the theater. With this club students will have the chance to create Renaissance style garb and share it with their classmates and the community. Fabric and patterns we can obtain through a small grant with JoAnn's Etc. We need sewing machines to use that fabric.
Our school is an alternative program and we have observed that after lunch our students don't focus well on academics, so we have built in club time for the students during the day rather than after school. Each teacher will be running a different club. Our students will have various creative outlets in the middle of the day in which to channel their energy and then return to academics. You will not only help the students daily academic process with this project, but also provide them an enriching experience that will have a very tangible outcome, and skills they can carry on.
