It's a Small World After All:Bringing Culture into the Class

Imagine studying another culture very different from your own. Imagine having to watch a 10+ year old boring documentary about cultural celebrations because that is the only thing available in your school. Instead, imagine seeing the celebration up close via the Internet, a lap top, and an LCD projector. I would love to have an LCD projector to use in my classroom for just this purpose. If I had a projector on hand then I could immediately show students celebrations, art, current events and so much more with just a flick of a few switches! I teach middle school Spanish and World Languages. I am expecting to have between 250-300 students this year. Because of a new middle school built in our zone, our population is changing. We should have about 760 students this year; 39% will be on free or reduced lunch and about 50-75 students will participate in our ESL program. We only have a couple of working LCD projectors in our school and you have to sign up way in advance to use one. All of the students in my Spanish and World Language classes will benefit from having an LCD projector in class. The only material needed is an LCD projector and a replacement bulb. I already have a laptop with Internet connection. I think it would be wonderful for my students to have instant access to world culture when it is relevant to what we are studying. Instead of just telling them about the Tomatina in Spain, I can show them pictures from the latest tomato fight. While studying the Day of the Dead, we can pull up an altar and see first hand what goes on one. When we study the famous Spanish artists we can go on virtual tours of El Prado as a class, or in World Languages we could look at cultural aspects of Germany, Japan and France. I know the students would get so much more out of a lesson than just seeing it on the written page. We could also use the projector for students to present their own multi-media presentations. I hope you will consider helping me to open this cultural window to my students.
