I teach seventh grade in the Chicago Public Schools. I teach in a high-need community. Most of our students are English second language learners and struggle with reading. I am searching for novels to enrich their reading program. They need to be exposed to novels that they will want to read rather than watch T.V. I have done research on high interest novels for students and have found that the Cirque Du Freak novels are truly enjoyed by middle school students. Our community lacks adequate funding. Therefore, it is the students who suffer. I would love to have these box sets for the students to continue reading and loving what they are reading!!!!
Our students struggle because they are English second language learners! They need books that they will look forward to reading and that they will want to read with friends!!!
In order for students to become better readers, they simply must read. Children these days have television, computers, myspace, video games, and many other things that keep them away from opening up a book. I think as educators and concerned citizens we need to compete with these things and the only way to do that is to find things that children will want to read. I love to read, and I remember as a child reading Mary Higgins Clark's "Still Watch". It was the best book. From that day on I was "hooked" on reading. I am looking for the same type of novels to do that for my students. These novels are perfect for getting kids reading and getting them excited about reading. I want these books to get them "hooked" so that they are always on the search for another great reading experience!!!
Your help will instill the love of reading which is lacking in so many children today. There is no better gift than the gift of reading. I can't imagine my life without reading and having the strong reading skills that I have. You will make it possible for my students to embark on their life long reading adventure!!
