This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
I am a 4th grade Math, Science, and Social Studies teacher at Gregory-Lincoln Elementary School, an inner city school in the shadows of Downtown Houston. Although the neighborhood is transitioning through gentrification, the elementary school serves the largest public housing project in Houston.
We have been working extremely hard since I have been at this school to increase our test scores and it is working. Unfortunately, this means that all of our money goes to supporting that cause and new materials are extremely hard to get. My students are bright students, who despite their poverty, are exposed through cable TV to multi-sensory learning tactics daily.
I would like to bring this power into the classroom by using the World Wide Web and a projector to enhance my lessons, especially in Science and Social Studies. I have used these tools effectively at other schools where they were available to me and have seen the difference it makes for the students to see these multimedia presentations. I need a laptop and projector to be able to accomplish this.
My students get so excited about anything that seems to them to be out of the "boring" norm of texts and paper. I would love to boost their retention by giving them visual representations. Thank you so much for considering my proposal!
