Ouch! Student Laboratory Safety Is A Must

My project needs laboratory gloves to protect students' hands from chemicals, graduated cylinders, laboratory aprons, and laboratory goggles.

Introduction: I teach physical science (high school credit bearing course taught to 8th graders) to the students identified as gifted at a junior high school (grades 7-8). Situation: The school is designed for students in grades 7-8. The science curriculum for those respective grades does not require the use of chemicals that could be harmful if not handled carefully. However, I teach a physical science class in which students are learning chemistry. There experiments that I cannot allow my students to do using things such as acid because we do not have the appropriate safety equipment. Solution: The introduction of this laboratory safety equipment will enable me to let students participate in activities and experiments now that would have previously been extremely unsafe. The students will be able to more safely handle more volatile and slightly more dangerous chemicals and substances. The laboratory goggles will protect the students' eyes while the aprons will protect their clothing. The students will get gloves when appropriate and be shown the appropriate way to take the gloves off and dispose of them. I have also requested graduated cylinders because the school does not have many and most of the ones we do have are broken or cracked. The students will use the graduated cylinders in measuring various chemicals while going through the steps of laboratory safety. The graduated cylinders will also be used countless other times. Closing: I hate having to limit the experiences of my students because of limitations of equipment available. You can help make these activities a reality for my students by making a donation.
