I am a 10th grade biology teacher of a newly-formed charter school in an urban school district in the south. My school has a student population of 800. 85% of these students are receiving free or reduced lunch. 67% of the students who took the graduate exit exam in spring scored below basic in science. Students in this computer age learn better and achieve more with the infusion of technology in science instruction. My students will start using the PASCO probeware and data analysis software this fall to collect and analyze laboratory data. The students will take turn in using one desktop computer in my classroom to connect the probeware equipment when they perform laboratory investigation. Then, the students will complete the lab report in the computer laboratory. There is only one computer lab in my school so the use of the lab is scheduled to accommodate all subject areas. The students then need USB flashdrives to store the collected laboratory data. Learning science by doing laboratory and analyzing data using technology, the science inquiry skills of the students will be enhanced which will lead to improved test scores; intrinsic interest in science; and a desire to pursue a career in science. If the proposal is funded, more students will be inspired to take part in the rebuilding of this haven, which was once devastated by the destructive hurricane Katrina, through science and technology. The intellectual rebuilding of this city is something that will not be destroyed by whatever kind of disaster. To the prospective donor, your generosity will forever be engraved in the hearts of the future scientists in this part of the nation.
