Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Comic books in the classroom is a movement that I believe in and this will be my first attempt at using them in the class. I have been doing a lot of reading on inspiring reading and comics could be a way to show students important themes that can be found in literature in ways other than before.
My students need an escape from their world.
I am teaching in a low income (free breakfast and lunch), high crime, and mostly single parent home area of Southern California. We have one of the lowest graduation rates in the state, and I want to see these students succeed in the world and not live in despair. They cannot get out of this area unless they are willing to read and write. I am hoping that 6 copies of each book will spark that interest in them. I know that reading is only the start...but it is a good start.
My Project
I have previously had a project that was funded where I received copies of The Watchmen. That was just a start. This time I am asking for cooks of Batman's Hush and the graphic novel Maus, a great story about the struggles during the Ralucaust. With this project and the previous one I am building a graphic novel unit that I will have the students read, discuss, share and even present with their classmates. With your help we are finding an alternative method to reach the students.
This is important to me because I want to find new ways to inspire my students.
I struggle as they struggle with reading because they are not interested in what we are reading. I am hoping to a new way, graphic novels, to inspire reading and sharing in my class.
