"Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much," Helen Keller said, and with the collaborative technology available today this has never been more true. However, shrinking district resources and the scarcity of computers limit what my students can accomplish with Google Apps for education.
My students attend a rural school district in Nebraska, which has adopted Google Apps for Education.
The typical classroom is a mix of socioeconomic status, but the one thing they all enjoy is working with technology to problem-solve and work together on a variety of projects related to social studies. Their eyes light up when technology is infused with learning, but this has been an increasingly difficult prospect to achieve due to diminishing district resources. Our school has faced economic difficulties that have put a growing strain on our technology resources. Students are allowed to bring their own technology to school; but not all students have this luxury, and the lack of these items places undue attention on those who cannot afford them. When I am able to reserve the required technology for classroom activities, the collaborative nature of my middle school students is unleashed and they create amazing things while working together in a 21st century environment!
My Project
My middle school students love using technology to enhance their learning. And as a teacher, I attempt to include technology in each unit of study. Google Apps for Education, with the addition of a classroom set of Chromebooks, will allow my students to collaborate in new ways and unlock their full potential as learners in a 21st century world. Creating presentations, exploring the world with Google Earth, and creating a paperless classroom are all possible with the fulfillment of funding for my project. Please make this world a reality for my students.
Through your donation, you will provide a technology-rich classroom environment for over 170 students.
Along with enhancing the student learning throughout the year, you will be encouraging students to work in a collaborative environment where each contributor is an important part of the whole. As an educator in the social studies classroom, I believe this is one of the most important lessons we learn in schools today!
