I am a first year teacher at an underfunded school on the South side of Chicago and would like to give my students the opportunity to use supplemental resources in the classroom. I currently teach freshman and sophomores, and would like to do a unit on current events and economics with my students. For a student to be a great learner they must be able to use more than just a textbook to research their history. Currently at my school we barely have enough money for each of our students to have a textbook, let alone a supplemental text. We also do not have a library with up to date materials in it for students to research. The solution to this problem is simple. In order for me to teach my students I need to make available a supplemental text for them that is appealing and interesting. By having a class set of "Freakeconomics" the students will be able to read passages that they can relate to, and also topics that interest them. This text will also encourage discussion on current events and economic trends in America. In closing, by purchasing a class set of "Freakeconomics" my students will be able to read a supplemental text that interests them and challenges them to think outside the box. Sometimes a textbook is too dry and by having something new and different I feel the students will be inspired to not only read this text but to go research more information.
