Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am the art teacher for Leslie Stemmons Elementary School in Dallas. I teach k-6th grade. Stemmons is a title 1 school and this is our second year for the art program. Last year I introduced origami to all grades (k-6) and ceramics to only 3rd and 4th grade. Both projects were a great success! However I was not satisfied that I had to pick the grades that used clay. Due to budget restrictions I was not able to order more than a few boxes. Therefore not every grade was able to participate and experience ceramics. Origami was a great success. The students actually came to me requesting to learn origami. Next year I would really love to have the students use "origami paper" to enrich the activity and build from the skills they learned last year. Some clay project ideas I have for this year are sculpture, pinch pots, coiling and pinch characters. I have found that my students are very enthusiastic, motivated and eager to learn new things. I have a very talented group of young artists, I just need the materials to help inspire them.
