Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Our class social studies curriculum is centered around project-based studies. There is no more comprehensive or inclusive project than to produce a film. This year we have spent a great deal of time studying the lives of the ancient Greeks as well as their literature and theater. Our studies brought us to the conclusion that how a story was told is what made the storyteller a success, as Homer and Sophocles are judged, because almost all the stories in ancient Greece were already known to the audience. With that in mind we began writing and planning our own adaptations of various Greek myths. From the Golden Apple of Discord to the battle between the Olympians and the Titans our stories have their own interpretations and understanding and are ready to be shared with the world. Two digital cameras would allow us to use visual imagery to represent our interpretation of the events and stories of the ancient Greeks, but in reality this process could be applied to almost any curriculum area. I feel this is a particularly powerful force for my students because they live in a visual-media world. They understand what images create the emotions and feelings they want to inspire in their audience. The MacBook is the easiest film editing tool to use today. It comes equipped with iMovie which will allow the students to turn what they film into a DVD they can watch. Editing is an integral part of the writing process and it is as well with film. The language of juxtaposition is something that I stress with my students, and in no more obvious way can that be seen than in the film editing process. By placing an image next to another the meaning and emotion of each image is changed or enhanced. This equipment is powerful equipment. It will allow us to apply almost anything we imagine to our work. All this is an intense experience and it is an experience that I would love to bring to my students. My students have such a unique understanding of the world. Please help us to bring our visions into it. Your assistance in accomplishing this is greatly appreciated.
