This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

KIPP San Francisco Bay Academy is an urban charter middle school that currently serves grades 5-8. This is our fourth year in the Western Addition neighborhood of San Francisco, where we are committed to having an impact. Our mission, like the mission of all KIPP schools, is to prepare our students for top quality high schools, colleges, and the competitive world beyond. Preparation begins in 5th grade, and students work hard everyday from 7:30 - 5pm (for three weeks in the summer and every other Saturday) so that they can compete with their more privileged peers in affluent communities. To reward our students for their hard work at the end of the year, each grade-level takes a different class trip. For example, the 5th grade attends a camp called MOSAIC where they learn about team-building, diversity, and conflict resolution. The 7th grade travels every June to a Shakespeare Festival in Oregon for one week. These trips occur annually and require students to bring sleeping bags. Because many of our students come from low-income communities, most have never experienced sleeping outdoors, do not own sleeping bags, or are unable to purchase them. I am requesting sleeping bags that will be able to be used by students in grades 5-8 for years to come. The trips for each grade-level occur at different times, so it is likely that multiple students will be able to use these sleeping bags each year, with the school only incurring the cost of cleaning. There have been families in the past unwilling to send their children on our wonderful, educational trips because they cannot purchase sleeping bags. The trip is free for families otherwise. If families know that these will be provided, many more students will be able to benefit from the experience of attending camp MOSAIC, the Shakespeare Festival, and this year, a trip to Washington D.C. Thank you.
