Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

As a high school art teacher, I have been incorporating different reading and writing strategies into my art curriculum. I teach at a high school that is 68% African-American, so I believe that teaching through experiencing the Harlem Renaissance is very important. I want the students to read Bronx Masquerade by Nikki Grimes so they can relate the past to the present. The other activities will include reading the poetry of Langston Hughes, looking and critiquing artworks of Romare Bearden, Jacob Lawrence, Aaron Douglas, William H. Johnson, Augusta Savage and James VanDerZee and reading about various jazz/blues musicians while listening to music by Bessie Smith, Duke Ellington, Dizzy Gillespie, Coleman Hawkins, Cab Calloway, Ella Fitzgerald, Louis and Billie Holiday. The lesson will consist of the students being able to learn through a variety of strategies to make the lesson much more meaningful. I have listed the diverse strategies below. •Diary Entry: Record "Journal to the Third Power" every chapter of Bronx Masquerade. •Research: Fill out the Artist Fact Sheet provided on an artist of choice from the Harlem Renaissance. •Poetry: Create a poem about how you see yourself in your cultural world of today. •Music: Using the music lab, find music that connects to your poem and make a CD. •Read-Aloud: Using your CD play music low as you read poem out loud. •Composition: Write lyrics for a song that portrays your life to a hip-hop/blues/jazz scene. •Composition: Using the Music Lab, create music to put with your lyrics and record to CD. •Artwork: Create a mixed-media collage work of art using copies of old and new family pictures, done in the Romare Bearden style. •Reflection: In paragraph format, write a reflection on one of the above processes. I will need a class set of 30 Bronx Masquerade books, books and CD's of Harlem Renaissance musicians, reproductions of Harlem Renaissance artists, and 100 blank writable CD's. In my wish list I have included a range of book reading levels so I can reach all students.
