Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Thank you for considering this proposal. I am a 5th and 6th grade Social Studies teacher at KIPP San Francisco Bay Academy. KIPP SF Bay Academy is a public charter school located in the Western Addition of San Francisco, where 75% of our students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. Our mission is to ready our students for excellent high schools so that they can attend excellent colleges. I recently reflected on how I can make my classroom more engaging and appealing to all learners. During this reflection period I began to question my current teaching strategies and what they offered my students. I thought about ways to reach all learners while still keeping motivation levels high. I examined my daily routines and the various activities that I bring into my classroom. As I continued to dissect my teaching style I noticed something was missing. I have been hesitant to embrace the world of technology and allow for it to play a role in my classroom. (I kid you not, I own no laptop and I still write out my lesson plans and most of my class works and homework!) At the end of this reflection period I found myself questioning why I still applauded myself for being a teacher who can effectively teach without using technology in the classroom. In the year 2007, I see no reason why I should not be embracing all methods to reach and teach my students. Thank you for considering this proposal. I am a 5th and 6th grade Social Studies teacher at KIPP San Francisco Bay Academy. This is why I hope to have donated to my classroom one LCD projector. While teaching both American History and Ancient Civilizations I have found that reading text, discussing text, and showing pictures related to the text are not enough. I strongly believe that many of my students would benefit and become more engaged by learning if they had visuals at their fingertips! Imagine the wonder and awe of a class of thirty students who can take a visual tour through the Ancient Pyramids of Giza! Or even better, follow the Brahmaputra or Ganges rivers as they snake down the Himalaya Mountains! An LCD projector would effectively introduce my students to many facets of our dynamic world, sparking their desire to learn more about it. I would also project engaging test-review games that I have developed using PowerPoint. I have templates for Jeopardy, Who Wants to Be a Millionaire, Hollywood Squares, Pyramid, Family Feud, and Wheel of Fortune. Each of the games is customized to maximize both student engagement and test preparation time, yet they are dependent upon having equipment with which to project them. I hope to procure one LCD projector. This year, approximately 160 students will benefit from this donation. However, considering I will be using this equipment in future years also, the number then balloons to the thousands. Thank you for your time!
