Yarn on the floor. Sheets of stickers on different shelves. Boxes are piled high. Glue sticks that are not closed properly are sticking to the scissors. The roll of masking tape is found at the bottom of the big bin. The list goes on and on. This is the result of the Art Area in my classroom everyday after school. As difficult as it may be to remind my first graders to put things back where they found them and to clean up after themselves, I need to take most of the responsibility here.
This is why I am writing this proposal to ask you for help in organizing my Art Area. I need a storage unit with different sized compartments to hold small art supplies such as scissors and glue sticks and larger items such as boxes, trays, and paint. I cannot expect my students to help organize the art materials if I do not provide them with proper storage.
I'd like to continue using the Art Area everyday, but the cleaning and reorganizing is having me think twice about letting the class use the area as often as they do. I see the Art Area as a place for my first graders to self-explore and self-discover different ways to express themselves. They can make spaceships and animal homes out of scraps and recyclable materials or they can paint a picture.
With a proper storage unit and labeled bins, I can see all of my students (and myself!) enjoy the Art Area even more. Thank you so much for your generosity. The storage unit will remind me of generous donors like yourself year after year after year.
