This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our fine arts magnet school is located in a vibrant and diverse community. Although we are in a high poverty district, our school has been able to retain our fine arts magnet status. However, it has been a challenge to find the funding for art supplies.

Our fine arts school covers dance, drama, and the visual arts.

I have taught at our school for 20 years and witnessed many incredible art based projects which have tied into our academics. The students that attend our magnet school thrive when art is weaved into the core curriculum. For some students art is their motivation for coming to school and an area where they have success or excel, providing an important balance in their total educational experience. In the past our amazing PTO was able to provide the funds for such items as an artist in resident visit, new curtain/sound system for stage, art materials, and more. However, it has been very challenging to raise the necessary funds to continue these projects. I have personally witnessed that regular participation in the arts develops self-confidence, self-discipline, persistence, and the knowledge of how to make multiple revisions to create high quality work. Our students thrive through the arts!

My Project

In the past our teachers have built full-sized wigwams, large models of the Mayflower, made vividly colorful ceramic pottery, designed amazing scenery for our three annual musicals, and created fabulous visual art pieces. Most of our teachers do theme based units with the fine art specialists giving parallel lessons that also embrace the curriculum. Today more than ever the arts are needed by our students as a forum for safe expression, communication, exploration, imagination, and cultural and historical understanding. Art classes provide students a chance to develop cognitive and creative skills, and to develop their imaginations. Our students are most engaged when we creatively approach the curriculum. Using the students' passion for the arts equals success!

Brain research confirms that arts education strengthens student problem-solving and critical thinking skills, adding to overall academic achievement, school success, and preparation for the work world.

The arts teach our students to be more tolerant and open through multicultural and historical perspectives and through their involvement in the creative process itself. Help keep the arts alive and vibrant at our school by donating to purchase paint, scissors, marker and glitter and much more!
