My Students

Patricia Polacco compares reading with honey from the bee tree--it adds the sweet to your life. Providing rich, quality examples of reading traits and concepts to our students through picture books will help add the sweetness to their lives through the world of books.

Our students are a diverse, multi-capable, energetic group!

Each fifth grade class is comprised with gifted, English language learners, special needs, and multi-handicapped students to provide a fully inclusive classroom setting. Our school is located near a large military installation in Ohio, resulting in a fairly transient population. Additionally, our students face parent deployment, mid-year moves, and enter our district with a variety of educational experiences already under their belts. Our students are eager to learn and ready to begin to share their knowledge with others.

My Project

We are requesting an assortment of children's picture books to use as read alouds during our language arts block. These books will help model and make connections with specific reading skills and traits for the kids to later explore in their own independent reading. These books are prime examples of traits such as setting, point of view, plot, characterization, theme, foreshadowing, flashback, and figurative language.

Your donation will provide quality examples of published writing for the students to make connections, compare, and emulate as they begin their own literacy journey.

These books will provide a stepping stone to apply skills on their own reading level and give our class a common discussion point when discussing reading.
