Let's Finger Knit Jump Ropes!

My students need cotton string to finger knit (in art class) their own jump ropes to use during recess time & gym classes.

My Students

Remember when you or your friends would go outside & jump rope? Sadly this is an activity of the past. Children are spending their free time either playing video games, surfing the computer or watching TV. They are missing out on the essentials of play. It's time to jump rope and move!

My students are energetic, creative and caring individuals.

They love coming to art class to express themselves, and to learn skills and crafts to make things that are useful to themselves and others. In the previous years, in art class, the students learned how to knit, and collectively made beautiful scarves to donate to children in a Russian orphanage, and to Women in Need, an organization that helps homeless families.

My Project

The children feel proud when they can make something they can use. And since the phys. ed dept. doesn't have the money to buy jump ropes for all the children I would like to teach them to make their own. I will teach the children the craft of finger knitting in art class using simple cotton twine and their own fingers. Once complete, they will have made a solid jump rope which they can use at recess and at home. These jump ropes, made with their own hands, will be an inspiration to go outside and jump!

This develops both brain hemispheres, creates coordination and dexterity in their hands, and the repetitive movement of the knitting has a calming effect on their system.

The children will use these jump ropes immediately! They can use them at recess time, and at home. Jumping rope will strengthen their body and their spirits!
